Spring At Bloomery Mountain
Last Sunday offered us a beautiful Spring day for a short drive over to Hampshire County, West Virginia. This area is about 20 minutes away and is a very beautiful country region. Like other places in the Appalachian Mountain areas, the countryside is either wooded or open farm land with mountains in the nearby background.
When we crossed over from Frederick County here in Virginia into Hampshire County, West Virginia, we came upon a tiny area known as Bloomery. Passing through the town on Route 127, you can easily spot the small grocery mart and the U.S. Post Office. That’s the town. There are a few homes in Bloomery, no sidewalks. No town activity, either, except for the occasional car driving through.
That’s the town. Welcome to Bloomery. Bloomery is in close proximity of a small Appalachian Mountain that I call Bloomery Mountain. Sunday, this mountain was trumpeting it’s Springtime song.
With Sunday’s clear blue sky and bright sunshine, Bloomery Mountain was ablaze with springtime color. With the turn of every curve on the backroads, there were wildflowers and greens of every shade.
All of the trees in this region are now in leaf. Many spring wildflowers are also blooming. Roadside Columbines, Bluebells, Violets, and Phlox were easy to spot on the backroads as we drove over Back Creek and Sleepy Creek. This wild Columbine was growing in the shade by the side of the road, one blossom in a large patch of Columbines not far from Back Creek.
This morning as I continued on with my current project, I realized the colors I was using reminded me of our Sunday drive, so this unfinished quilt top already has a name: Spring At Bloomery Mountain. When we use this quilt, I’ll always be reminded of our Sunday springtime drive over to Bloomery, West Virginia.

It’s so gorgeous up your way. We live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains in upstate South Caroina. We just drove up the old Saluda (NC) grade Sunday with my Dad to enjoy the scenery. I love it. I always want to just walk the rivers and see where they lead.
