Crazy Quilt CloseUps V

November 30, 2007

Here are some more closeup photographs of my antique quilt. I hope that some of these photographs have served as an inspiration for future needlework projects.

Judy, from Possibilities, wrote of inspiration when looking at the handwork of others: “It is my preference to say that things like this are “points of departure” or “inspiration” (which this certainly is) for my needlepoint designing – but in some cases, it seems downright plagiarism of sorts. ” She continues, “The colors, fabric choices, arrangement, and embellishments have made my work easier, so it has simply been a matter of figuring out which threads to use, which stitches would best imitate the effect of the background fabrics – and, of course, the top-stitched embellishments.”

Whether we are merely admiring handwork, or we are studying it to incorporate a portion of that work into a different piece, we often use the handwork made by others as a springboard for our own design. Perhaps one of the designs found in this crazy quilt has intrigued someone who will stitch it into their own 21st century piece. Threads truly weave in and out of our lives, as they have through the centuries and different cultures.

Here are a few more closeup photographs of my antique crazy quilt. This crazy quilt (and a number of other items) was purchased from a local estate auction here in Virginia. (More on that auction later — promise!)

The next two photographs show chain stitches. One fabric is decorated in a checkerboard grid of chain stitches. The other fabric also has a series of stem stitched lines added in.Crazy quilt embroidery

Look carefully at the below photograph. Do you see the cotton basting threads still attached to the golden colored silk ribbon?

Crazy Quilt embroidered birdHappy Thanksgiving!

Do you think this embroidered bird is a turkey or perhaps a stork?!

I hope you will enjoy looking at more closeup photographs of this Victorian-era crazy quilt.

The ribbons and fabrics made from velvets and silks add to the quilt’s texture.

Crazy quilts! Crazy quilts are delightful– they have elegance and charm, and they are artisticly flamboyant but often made with frugality. No wonder they’re known as crazy quilts!

Since Thanksgiving will be filled with a flurry of activities (with little time to spare), I’ll use this week to share some close up photos of the embroidery handwork on an antique crazy quilt that I own.
