Laura Wheeler's Handy PotholderHow To Make A Handy Potholder

YOU NEED: Scraps or 1/8 yard 36-inch fabric; 1/8 yard cotton flannel for interlining; 1 yard bias binding; 1 1/2 yards red rickrack; 1 1/2 yards green rickrack; matching thread.

TO CUT: Use pattern given and cut 2 on fold; cut 2 on fold of cotton flannel. Mark diagonal sewing lines on front and back of potholder.

TO MAKE POTHOLDER: Baste interlining to wrong sides of each side of potholder. Baste rickrack to right sides, following guide lines, and stitch in place. With wrong sides together, bind outside edges with bias binding, leaving bottom straight edge free. Bind opening in same way with bias binding. Attach a loop of binding to top.

Laura Wheeler Potholder patternsheet

For this pattern to be re-drafted, measurements were taken from the original pattern sheet. Not including a 1/4″ seam allowance, the length of this potholder is 7 1/4″. The width of the potholder is 1 3/8″ wide, not including seam allowance.

Remember that the width of the potholder will actually become 2 3/4″ wide due to the pattern’s fold-line. The width is calculated by adding the width of 1 3/8″ on each side of the fold-line. (This measurement does not include the seam allowance.)

When drafting this pattern, create a gentle curve at the top, on the side opposite the fold-line. Be sure to add seam allowance along the left side of this potholder pattern. Mark the right side for the fold-line so that your pattern will be accurate and fabric placement will be correct.
